Exchange and mating with animals from other populations is necessary. 100 years ago numerous otters (Lutra lutra)were found in The Netherlands. Due to hunting and water pollution their numbers decreased dramatically. The last otter was run over and killed in 1988. A sound otter population is dependent on a suitable habitat, with clean water and overgrown banks, where exchange and mating with animals from other populations is possible.
