Summer of Soul

A powerful and compelling documentary

The documentary is a music film that blends live performances with archival footage, capturing an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture, and fashion.

For six weeks during the summer of 1969, cameras captured the Harlem Cultural Festival in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). Yet after that summer, the footage disappeared from public view for decades. At the very same time, just 100 miles (160 kilometers) to the north, another music festival was being filmed—one that would go on to become legendary: Woodstock.
