Digging into the Stone Age
Exhibition | 26 April 2018 - 31 March 2029
Where the Ypenburg neighborhood in The Hague stands now, a burial site was discovered in the 1990s containing 31 graves.
The graves contained the remains of 42 people: women, men and children. Around 5500 years ago this area was also inhabited for several centuries. The archaeological excavations carried out here are the focus of this exhibition.
The focus is on archaeological research and the work of different specialists within the field. How can you tell if a skeleton belonged to a man or a woman? Can you see from a skeleton if someone suffered from a disease? How did people live? What tools did they use? What did they eat? Step into the shoes of an archaeologist and explore for yourself in the exhibition First coastal dwellers
Reconstructions based on three excavated skeletons: a man, a woman and a child are on display in the exhibition. There is also a reconstruction of a house, created from traces found in the landscape.
