What could a child understand and what was beyond their grasp? How did the war affect their everyday life?
Answers to these questions can be found in the stories, objects, photographs, film clips and documents of 34 well known and unknown individuals who were children when the Second World War began. They show deeply treasured belongings, valued not for their material worth but for the stories and memories they carry.
A plaque in the exhibition commemorates 1942, when Jewish children from The Hague were deported, most of whom never returned. Designed by The Hague sculptor Theo van der Nahmer, the plaque was donated to the Museon after a Jewish school was demolished. Children’s author Kitty Coster saved the names of 1691 children, later expanded to 2061, including Roma and Sinti children.
"Fun for all ages" History, nature and culture come alive interactively, there’s so much to see and it’s really enjoyable! I still love visiting. The Child at War and the water exhibition are especially impressive.
