SURFILMUSIC

With Jack Johnson

SURFILMUSIC is a new documentary tracing Jack Johnson's remarkable journey from talented surfer to filmmaker and world-renowned musician.

The film shows how, in his early years, Johnson laid the creative foundations for a much broader artistic career while making surf films with his close friends. The unique moments they captured both in and out of the water would later find new life in his songs.

By blending rare footage from those early surfing days with material from his personal and family archives, alongside present-day reflections, the film tells the story of how life experiences, friendship, and a spirit of exploration helped shape the sound of his music and the stories behind his songs.

Director's Statement

Jack and I became friends just as our student days were coming to an end and the real world was beginning. He went to film school while I started working as a film trailer editor. He had a natural talent behind the camera, and I loved shaping stories in the edit, so we quickly became a great team. We simply loved making films and finding the perfect music to bring them to life.

Jack was an incredible cinematographer, and I had big plans for him—until I heard his music. One day he played me a cassette of songs he'd recorded on a four-track recorder, and it felt like discovering a classic album by a favorite artist I didn't even know I had.

SURFILMUSIC tells the story of how those bedroom recordings found their way around the world, carried by the friends who believed in them from the very beginning. This film was truly a collective effort, made by friends and family.
