Far away, yet close
Exhibition | 2 June 2017 - 31 June 2029
A slowly moving dot among the stars, sometimes blinking, sometimes almost invisible. Within minutes it disappears again, but what it does is far from insignificant. Explore the fascinating world of satellites and their impact on our daily lives!
In our daily lives, satellites play such an unnoticed role that we simply take it for granted that they always work. If communication satellites failed, rally drivers in the desert or lone mountain climbers would suddenly be unable to use their satellite phones. If television satellites went down, we would immediately lose access to some of our familiar channels. And if the GPS satellite network went offline… can you still read a map?
In the exhibition Satellites – Far away, yet close, you will learn what it takes to keep satellites in orbit. The hall also highlights their main areas of application. As a visitor you enter a space resembling a space station, with the cosmos outside. You can remotely operate various setups from inside, just like real satellites. What are the key components found in every satellite? How does the Ariane launch rocket work? And what kinds of orbits do satellites follow?
In the exhibition satellites in space you can find a small piece of the moon. The municipality The Hague received a moon rock on loan from NASA. You can even touch this piece of the moon. Very special!
