Make a Melati flower

Wish flowers and wind flowers

This flower is a symbol of connection, respect, care and compassion.

You’ve probably heard, learned or read something about the history of the Netherlands during World War II. Much less is known about the history of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) during that time. Yet there are two million people in the Netherlands with roots in the Dutch East Indies.

Every year on August 15 we pause to remember their experiences and the family members they lost during the war. Taking time to reflect on each other’s history helps us understand one another and often we have more in common than we first thought.

Many people wear a melati on August 15 as a symbol of remembrance. The melati (Javanese jasmine) is a traditional flower from the Indies. It represents connection, respect, care and compassion. Make your own melati and write a special wish on it. Who will you give yours to?
