Imprints in the ice

For this experiment, you first need to freeze a plastic container with water. Make sure the key can rest completely on top of the ice.

  • A key
  • A large ice block, where the key is able to rest on the surface
  • A stopwatch 

Instructions chevron down

  1. Take the container with ice and remove the ice block.
  2. Do you feel the ice sticking to your hands?
  3. Place the piece of ice back in the container.
  4. Put a key on top of your ice block.
  5. Count slowly to 10.
  6. Now try to pick up the key. Can you do it?
  7. Do you notice anything unusual?
  8. If not, place the key back on the ice and count to 100, or set a stopwatch for 1 minute.
  9. Then try picking up the key again.
  10. What do you notice now?
  11. Can you guess what happened and why?
  12. JYou can continue experimenting to see if the same works with other objects.
