“Ghost Elephants brings together everything we have come to expect from a Werner Herzog documentary: a sense of childlike curiosity alongside original philosophical reflections.”

Ghost Elephants is a documentary by director Werner Herzog. The film follows an expedition to the highlands of Angola, a region of dense forests, steep slopes and very limited infrastructure. In this area stories have long been told about a small group of elephants that are rarely seen.
Steve Boyes conservation biologist and leader of the National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project, searches for signs of these animals during his journey trough Angola. He works alongside three KhoiSan trackers: Xui, Xui Dawid and Kobus. Their deep knowledge of the landscape and their skill in reading tracks play a key role in the expedition.
The film follows the process of searching, observing and interpreting tracks in the landscape. Images of the landscape are interwoven with moments from the journey and conversations along the way.
During the journey, different perspectives come together: scientific research, local knowledge and the landscape in which the expedition takes place. The film shows how the search unfolds step by step in a region where little research has been done.
