About the film

At Pasvik High School, more than 200 miles above the Arctic Circle, teenagers take part in an unconventional gap year. No classrooms or mobile phones, but life in the wilderness: caring for huskies and learning to survive together in extreme conditions.

Directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady follow these teenagers at a turning point in their lives. What begins with insecurity and resistance slowly grows into confidence, connection and personal growth. The vast landscapes of northern Norway become the backdrop for this intimate coming of age story.

The title Folktales refers to Norwegian mythology, in which destiny is woven. The film shows a generation creating its own path: away from expectations, and closer to nature and to themselves.

Folktales is a warm and honest portrait of teenagers searching for direction in a world full of stimuli. A documentary that moves you, slows you down, and invites reflection on what really matters.
