De Indische Tafel

Memories of A Silenced Childhood

A group of men meets every week for an Indonesian lunch. During these gatherings, memories begin to surface of a childhood that was not spoken about for a long time.

The film follows men in their nineties who grew up as children in the colonial Dutch East Indies. Their stories lead back to the Japanese occupation and life in the internment camps during the Second World War.

About The Film

The documentary is structured around conversations at the table. During a shared lunch, the men talk about their childhood and about events from the war years.

Archival footage from Japanese propaganda films is used to make this period visible. The images show daily life in the camps and place the personal memories within a historical context.

In addition to the camp years, the film also looks at the period after the war. The men speak about the liberation, the Indonesian struggle for independence, and the changes that followed in the years afterwards.

The film combines conversations, archival footage, and historical fragments into a chronologically structured narrative about childhood, memory, and history.
